Kelly Kostanesky – Citizens Voice - [email protected]

Delaware Valley and Williamsport took over the meet, but Hazleton Area turned in a strong showing and Wilkes-Barre Area, Nanticoke Area, Valley West and Pittston Area all placed swimmers on the medal stand to open the District 2/4 Class 3A Swimming Championships on Friday at the Wilkes-Barre CYC.

On the boys side for Hazleton Area, freshman Logan Yakubowski placed third in the 200 individual medley and was a member of the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams that both finished third for the Cougars. Ryan Kovalick came in second in the 200 freestyle and Tony Goulstone was second in the 100 butterfly, just 0.16 seconds behind winner Aedan Walter of Delaware Valley.

Hazleton Area teammates Antonio Daiute and Cole Johnson finished third and sixth, respectively, in the 200 freestyle and joined Yakubowski and Liam Leonard on the 200 freestyle relay team. Tommy Pollock teamed up with Yakubowski, Goulstone and Kovalick on the 200 medley relay team for the Cougars.

Christopher Cabonilas captured second place in the 200 individual medley and Hugo Panecatl was sixth in the 100 butterfly for Nanticoke Area. The duo joined Michael Marcella and Jeffrey DeRocco to place fourth in the 200 medley relay. DeRocco, Marcella and Carbonilas teamed up with Joseph Reyes to finish fifth in the 200 freestyle relay.

Valley West’s Daniel Trillo-Izquierdo came in third in the 50 freestyle and combined with Jared Zawatski, Conner Uter and Ashton Hozempa to finish sixth in both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.

On the girls side, Abby Goulstone, Marina O’Hara, Bridget Reed and Sadie Hunsinger all finished with two medals apiece for the Cougars. O’Hara came in second in the 200 freestyle, just 0.19 seconds behind Williamsport’s Lydia Smith. Abby Goulstone took fourth in the 200 IM and Reed was sixth in the 200 freestyle. They joined O’Hara and Sadie Hunsinger on the 200 free relay team that finished third. Hunsinger teamed up with Natalie Yeager, Ashtyn Cartwright and Sabrina Campbell on the 200 medley relay team that came in third.

Wilkes-Barre Area’s Elizabeth Livingston came in fourth in the 50 freestyle. She teamed up with Danielle McGrane, Twittany Van and Jennifer Patron to take fourth place in the 200 freestyle relay and joined Patron, McGrane and Sarah Newman on the 200 medley relay team that finished fifth.

Valley West’s Miram Pipino placed third in the 100 butterfly and combined with Mckenna Melton, Esmerelda Romero and Sydney Bruno-Beck to finish fifth in the 200 free relay.

Nanticoke Area’s Casey Cabonilas was fifth in the 200 IM and joined Caitlin Lehman, Kaleah Moran and Vicki Ortiz to finish sixth in the 200 free relay.

WVC Swimming and Diving Preview
Tony Maluso – Citizens Voice

Nanticoke Area

Coach: Clare Finn

2018-19: Girls 7-5; Boys 6-5

Swimmers to watch: Girls — Julia Fritz, Caitlin Lehman, McKenzie Ball, Cassandra Cabonilas, Maggie Huertero. Boys — Chris Cabonilas, Mike Marcella, Hugo Panecatl, Jeff DeRocco

Outlook: Nanticoke Area has the talent to keep it in the upper-half of the conference. On the boys side, Cabonilas last year had times right in the mix as the season’s top marks. He provides a good foundation for the Trojans in dual meets with his ability to rack up a lot of points. Marcella, Panecatl and DeRocco back him up nicely and keep the team strong.

The girls team has a few veterans back, plus a couple talented freshmen including Cassandra Cabonilas. She joined veteran Lehman as multiple individual event winners in a season-opening win over Pittston Area on Wednesday.
