Dear Kindergarten and 1st grade parents::

Reading is the foundation of all learning. A child who can read well is more likely to be successful in school and in life. That is why we at the Greater Nanticoke Area School District are committed to the goal of ensuring that every child throughout the district becomes a good reader.
The first step to school success is to become a good reader. The summer months provide a great opportunity for children to spend time with books as well as to improve reading skills. This summer we are requiring students to read at least two books from the accompanying list. Dependent upon your child's grade level, your child will be required to complete an exercise for each of the two books read. The completed exercises will be collected by your child's homeroom teacher and will be due September 7, 2010. To save paper, we have copied the form on each side.

The work will be scored on a rubric as follows:

4 = Advanced 3 = Proficient 2 = Basic 1 = Below Basic O = Non-legible

We shall average the two scores and add the points to the Reading grade on the report card for the first interval.
To help you find any of these books, this list has been forwarded to Barnes and Noble. Some of the books are available at the Mill Memorial Library, E. Main Street, Nanticoke. Please ask the library staff to direct you to these books.
