Fire Prevention Week at K.M.
Smith
The Nanticoke and Newport Fire Departments visited K.M. Smith
School in the Greater Nanticoke Area School District. The students
were shown a video on EDITH-Exit Drill In The Home. Fireman John
Polifka discussed two ways out of a room, an exit plan, smoke
alarms, crawling through smoke, 911, and stop, drop, and roll.
Ember, the fire dog, also visited the children and also demonstrated
stop, drop, and roll. Teachers dressed up in the firemen's protective
suits to show the children what a fireman looks and sounds like
up close. Students also got to visit the "Smokehouse."
Here students could walk, crawl, and climb out of a simulated
house fire. First row, from left, are Sameerah Ali, Ryan Wiaterowski,
Frances Scarboro, Claire Aufiero, Walker Yale, and Dylan Brown
. Second Row: Paul Mierzwa(Newport), Brian Zegarski (Nanticoke),
and Jimmy Hoffman (Newport).
