Matusek celebrates 200th career victory
drosengrant@timesleader.com
Coming off a Wyoming Valley Conference Division II
championship in 2008, Nanticoke Area didnt have its best season
in 2009.
That was forgotten Monday as veteran coach
Mark Matusek claimed his 200th career victory with a 9-3 win against
MMI.
The Trojans end their season with a record
of 5-9-2.
You got to give him credit to even be
able to do it for 21 years, said Trojans assistant coach Ryan
Amos, who played under Matusek for four years and has been assistant
for six. We had no playoff shot for todays game, but he
had a three-day practice plan. He always had his teams prepared to
play.
Amos, who is the head coach of the Nanticoke
Area girls soccer team, said a plaque will be made for the coach and
it will be placed in the school.
Matusek finished his 21st season with the Trojans
and started the program in his first year. He has been the only boys
soccer coach in school history.
As being coach of the girls team and
having about seven wins, I cant imagine what its like
to have 200, said Amos, who graduated in 2001. I know
his dad is a staple at the varsity games and Im sure hes
very, very proud of him.
On the field, Alex Pawlush helped his coach
reach the milestone by scoring six goals in a rout over the Preppers,
while Cody Bukowski set a school-record with five assists.
Josh Lukeszewski, Joey Zwiebel, and Dustin
Robaczewski also scored for the Trojans.
Joe Hornak scored twice for MMI and Ryan Scirrotto
added a goal.

Coachs Comments: We graduated eight starters
and only have 11 returning players from last year, but they are coachable
and saw what it took to accomplish to win the last few years and what
it took to get there.
