Trojan Baseball Outlook 2007 - Times Leader
2006 WVC Record/Finish: 5-9, 7th
Players to watch: Robert Bertoni, Ryan Bevan, Tim Bevan, John Kaminski, Dan Olzinski, Steve Shiffka, Tyler Shipp, Jesse Stine
Outlook: Seven returning starters give the Trojans a strong dose of optimism for this season. The pitching staff is deep and the fielding behind the hurlers has the potential to be just as solid. To be sure, Nanticoke will be counting on both those strengths to carry the squad in the early going while the bats settle down and find a good rhythm.
Entering his second year as the head baseball coach at Nanticoke Area, Bob Bertoni figured it was time to bring back a tradition. With that in mind, Bertoni decided to revive the Trojan Classic which will get underway on Thursday when Crestwood plays Dallas at 4:15 at the Nanticoke Area High School Field.
On Friday, Nanticoke Area will meet Wyoming Seminary, also at 4:15. The tournament returns after a four-year hiatus, and Bertoni is hoping that it will provide the opportunity for all four teams to have a pretty good idea of where they stand heading into Monday when the high school baseball regular season opens up.
It was just a tradition that I wanted to bring back, Bertoni said. I talked with John Kashatus about it and I thought it would be a good thing to do.
Thursdays tournament opener will give Crestwood and Dallas a chance to get a good look at each other especially with both teams opening the regular season against each other. For Nanticoke Area, the Trojans will be making the jump up to AAA this season, after making a late run in last years Class 2A district tournament.
This is a great tournament to get us ready for the regular season, Bertoni said. When we put this together, we wanted to make sure we were going to get ourselves ready for the regular season.
The consolation game will be played Saturday at 11 a.m. with the championship at 2.
